How to omit the risk of human bias in AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative technology with the potential to revolutionise various industries and decision-making processes. However, the presence of human bias in AI systems poses significant ethical concerns and can perpetuate discrimination and inequality.

There are several suggested methods to eradicate human bias in AI tools. One such method proposed is the active diversification of the sources of data used to train AI models by developers. By ensuring that the data represents our diverse populations and viewpoints, the influence of biased data can be lessened, resulting in a more balanced and just AI system, eliminating the potential for discrimination.

A fundamental way to address the potential biases and ethical concerns associated with AI systems is to increase transparency and accountability. By making the decision-making process of AI systems more explainable and understandable to users and stakeholders, we can help ensure that these systems are being used fairly and responsibly. This involves designing AI systems with transparency in mind and implementing oversight mechanisms that allow for greater scrutiny of their behaviour and outcomes.

Another way in which we can reduce bias and ensure that AI systems are effective and ethical is by involving diverse stakeholders in their design and evaluation. Different individuals bring unique perspectives and experiences to the table, which can help identify potential biases and ensure the system is inclusive and equitable for all users. By working collaboratively, these newly developed AI systems can be sure of benefiting everyone in society equally and avoid perpetuating the aforementioned harmful stereotypes or discriminatory practices.

In addition, it’s important to consider technical strategies that can prevent bias, such as data pre-processing, appropriate model selection, and post-processing.

Pre-processing involves preparing and transforming raw data to make it suitable for analysis and modelling by artificial intelligence algorithms, by handling missing values, addressing inconsistencies, normalising, or standardising features, and reducing noise or outliers.

Model selection refers to choosing the most appropriate machine learning or AI model for a specific task or problem. Model selection is a crucial step because different AI models have different characteristics and capabilities, and selecting the suitable model can significantly impact the accuracy and efficiency of the AI system. It involves evaluating and comparing different models based on their performance metrics, complexity, interpretability, and other relevant factors to determine which model will likely yield the best results.

Post-processing is also crucial for AI developers to adhere to when removing bias. This stage involves applying transformations, filters, or modifications to the model’s output to enhance its usability, interpretability, or alignment with specific requirements. Post-processing aims to improve the AI system’s output’s quality, usability, or applicability in practical scenarios.

Finally, to ensure that AI systems are fair and equitable for all stakeholders involved, it is important to establish clear value-oriented standards that can guide the development and implementation of these technologies. We then need to see wider governmental organisations developing and upholding these regulatory standards and guidelines for AI developers and implementing usage globally to maintain a sense of consistency within these models.

AI may help omit human bias and speed up decision-making processes, particularly in emergency settings or environments where the human workforce needed to complete a task is counterproductive to the business. However, there are also differing views on the extent and significance of bias in AI, with some denying or downplaying its impact and others emphasising the need for critical awareness and action. It is important to remember that AI systems are only as good as the data they are trained on, and by diversifying the data sources, we can create a more accurate and unbiased representation of society. Equally, we maintain that while AI can help reduce human bias in decision-making, it is not a whole problem solution. It can also perpetuate or amplify existing biases if not designed and used responsibly. However, by adopting such standards outlined in this article, we can help promote greater transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in AI systems while ensuring these technologies are used responsibly and ethically. Whether designing AI-powered tools for healthcare, finance, or transportation, we must consider the diverse perspectives and needs of all stakeholders involved and work together to create AI removed from the influence of human bias to provide safe, reliable, and beneficial solutions for everyone.
